3 Signs Your Workout Isn’t Hard Enough

Have you ever wondered whether or not your workout is “hard enough?”

Sometimes it can be a little confusing on whether or not you are working out enough to challenge your body or if you’re pushing it too hard. It’s like goldilocks- you need to find the “just” right amount that is good for you and your body.

Keep reading to discover 3 signs your workout isn’t hard enough.

3 Signs Your Workout Isn’t Hard Enough

You're never sore or tired

Before we dive in, we want to first make an important point that you should always remember. You do NOT have to be sore after every workout. There is such a thing as “too much of a good thing,” and you don’t want to overwork your muscles and your body. So, if you know that you are someone who tends to push themselves too hard, then keep in mind that this post probably isn’t for you!

On the other hand, if you are someone who has been sticking to the same type of workout for weeks or even months or years, you are going to need to mix it up. If you’ve been doing the same type of workout over and over again and it’s getting to the point where you can’t remember the last time you were sore, then it might be time to change things up. You don’t necessarily need to completely revamp your workout. Instead, you can try little things to mix it up. For instance, it might be time to grab heavier weights or maybe you need to bump it up a level in a cardio class. Maybe you need to increase the number of times you workout.

Bottom line: Though you don’t want to be sore after every workout, it’s important to remember that a workout should be, well, work. If you can’t remember the last time you were sore, then it’s probably time to mix it up!

You don't work up a sweat

Again, we want to make the point that you don’t need to be sweating buckets every single time you workout. There are some really challenging workouts that won’t cause you to barely break a sweat, like barre or pilates. Yet, if you are someone who never sweats during their workout, it probably means that you aren’t working hard enough or maybe you aren’t doing any cardio since we tend to sweat more during cardio because our heart rate is more elevated.

Though strength training is important, cardio is equally important to keep your heart and lunges strong!

Bottom line: It’s important to include both cardio and strength training into your workout, so a little sweat from time to time is a great indicator if your workout is hard enough.

You aren't seeing any progress

The final sign that your workout isn’t hard enough is that you aren’t seeing any results. Our bodies are highly adaptable. If you’ve been doing the same workout over and over again, your body is going to build strength and endurance to be able to do that workout. It’ll come to a point where you aren’t challenging your body anymore. If you want to see progress or results, you’ll need to challenge your body. If you’ve hit a plateau, then it might be time to mix up your workout, whether it’s adding heavier weight or increasing repetitions or length of time spent working out.

Again we want to stress that if you are someone who is more than ready to challenge your body that you can go the other way too. If you are getting to the point where your body is always sore, you are always tired, you are struggling to get motivated or discovering new injuries, then you might have the opposite issue. You might be working out too hard!!

Bottom line: Listen to your body and know yourself. If you are someone who likes to live in your comfort zone and doesn’t like to step out of the box, it might be time to make some slight changes to your workout so you can see those results you want. If you are someone who is more than willing to challenge yourself, sometimes too much, then you may be working out too hard.
