How to Stay Motivated During the Holidays

Can you believe that we are nearing the end of 2021? All of the holidays aka the busy season is fast approaching. After the past year we had, we know so many are looking to jump right in and do ALL THE THINGS.

There’s a reason January is the biggest season for gym goers.

With all the extra tasks and get togethers, our motivation for exercise and diet is often placed on the back burner during the last months of the year. So, how do we stay motivated during the holidays? How do we finish the year strong? Keep reading for 5 tips on how to stay motivated so you look and feel good throughout the holidays into 2022.

How to Stay Motivated During the Holidays

Plan ahead.

The holidays are meant to be a time of joy and being with your family and friends. If that’s the case, then why do they feel so chaotic sometimes? It’s because you’re trying to cram in so many more additional tasks and activities on top of your already busy to do list. Of course you’re going to feel overwhelmed!

Instead, plan ahead. In fact, start planning NOW. Take a look at your calendar, whether it’s paper or electronic, and start blocking time to get all of your tasks done. Yes, you may have already marked time for your appointments, work to dos and activities, but what about all those other tasks? Over estimate the time it’ll take you to go present shopping and wrapping of gifts so you aren’t scrambling around last minute trying to get it all done.

What else should you add to that calendar? If you want to make sure to plan healthy meals and exercise, then you’ll need to make time for them. Book your classes ahead time (the December schedule is already out so you can plan ahead!) and then write it down in your calendar along with time that you’ll need to plan and prepare your meals.

Look ahead and take note of any extra busy times and be realistic with yourself. Maybe the week where you plan to get your shopping and wrapping done you make sure to get some My Chef meals, so you don’t have to worry about putting together a meal for you and your family.

Set SMART goals.

Another way to ensure that you stay motivated during the holidays is to set SMART goals for yourself. SMART goals are goals that are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant, and time-bound. After taking a look at your calendar and your schedule, pay close attention to that attainable piece of the SMART goal. During the holidays, your goals may have to be adjusted, but just having them can help you stay focused and not lose track.

Grab an accountability partner.

Did you know that those who have a supportive accountability partner are over 90% more likely to achieve their goals than those who don’t? It’s one of the major reasons we started Remix in the first place. We knew the importance of variety, but loved that boutique studios incorporated that community piece that’s so important. All the variety in the world isn’t going to help if you aren’t motivated to get to the gym in the first place.

Grab a family member, friend or even meet someone new at Remix. Share your goal with them and have them hold you accountable. Need some help? Ditch the all-or-nothing mindset and aim for movement.

Have you ever had a moment where you missed that workout or you ate that extra piece of candy only to find yourself falling completely off track? Sometimes we get caught up in that all-or-nothing mindset. “I missed my workout this morning,” turns into I’m missing my workout for the rest of the week. If you overslept, instead of marking the day off as a lost cause, aim for movement throughout the rest of the day. If you’re busy shopping, be sure to park further away so you get in some extra steps. If you’re busy wrapping presents, take some movement breaks or use that as opportunity to enjoy some stretches.

There’s a reason at Remix we aren’t super strict about someone coming to a class late or leaving early. We understand how busy things can be and we are big believers that even a little bit of movement is better than no movement at all. If you know your day is going to be crazy, you can even break up your workout. Pop on a virtual class for 20 minutes in the morning and then 25 minutes in the afternoon and you’ve got yourself a full workout!

Quick tip: If you do have to hop into class a little late, be sure to take things slow and make sure you’re nice and warm before grabbing heavy weights or jumping into some intense cardio!

Be flexible and find a balance.

The holidays are meant to be enjoyed. There’s no reason you need to stress yourself out about staying in shape and getting all the things done on your to do list because that stress isn’t good for your health either! Instead be flexible and focus on including those healthy habits. You overindulged at the holiday party? Don’t let that completely derail your diet. Instead, focus on adding in plenty of fruits, vegetables and water. Remember, finding balance isn’t about finding perfection.
