6 Ways to Beat the Overwhelm
Are you ready for the new season?
We keep saying, “We’re ready, but we’re not ready.” We’re ready to get into a new routine and on a schedule and have the kids back in school, but at the same time trying to get over the hurdle of making it all happen is overwhelming.
Let’s just say, there’s A LOT on the to do list.
And the emails…
It’s like information overload and trying to balance it all and keep it all on track is like some sort of circus act. We don’t know about you, but we aren’t good jugglers!
Are you feeling how we are feeling? If you have a vision of a completely organized schedule, of being on top of all of the appointments and meetings and games and extracurricular activities, but are just feeling so completely overwhelmed, then we’ve got some tips for you.
Here are 6 ways to beat the overwhelm.
A new season can be an exciting time, but also very overwhelming. Keep reading if you’re striving for some calm in your life.
Narrow down the major causes of your overwhelm.
First, it’ll be helpful to pinpoint the major causes of your overwhelm. Become aware of when that feeling is starting to creep in. Write it down or acknowledge those feelings. It may be something important at work or with your family that you can’t pass off, but maybe you could take steps to ease the overwhelming feelings associated with those tasks.
Set boundaries & prioritize
The next tip is often easier said than done. Why is saying “no” often so difficult? If you’re someone who is a people pleaser or even feeling like you need to make up for lost time with this past year, you may feel like you need to say yes to every single invite and request that comes your way. Just know that it’s okay to say no! A nice strategy to use is to use your partner or even your calendar as a way to buy yourself time to really think about the invite or request and check in to see if this is really something you need to prioritize. “Let me check in with my calendar first” can go a long way.
Declutter
Spring may get all of the “cleaning” glory, but every new season deserves a little time to declutter. We aren’t just talking about things in your house, car or garage either. Take some time to clean up that email inbox, all of your millions of pictures or all of those apps on your phone. Then, stick with it! Once you declutter your email inbox, for example, strive to keep it that way by designating specific times that you go through your emails and either delete, respond or file them away.
Strive for progress, not perfection.
Are you a perfectionist? Do you like everything to be a certain way? Sometimes it’s good to let things good and remind yourself that things won’t and can’t be perfect. When you are able to let things go, then it’ll help to take away some of that overwhelm.
Delegate or outsource.
One of the most beneficial things we have done for our time management and beating the overwhelm is a time audit. You can grab a free app that’ll easily track your day and where you spend the most of your time. Once you do that, clear patterns become apparent. You’ll see where you are spending the most of your time and then you can take a look and see if any of those tasks can be outsourced or delegated and taken off your plate.
Don’t believe everything you think.
So often we get wrapped up in our thoughts. We turn something that happens to us into a negative and soon enough it can spiral out of control leaving us feeling overwhelmed and anxious. Remember, don’t believe everything you think. Often times the negatives spins we put on events and things that happen are not all that bad. It goes back to that perfectionist attitude. You may feel like people will look down on you if everything isn’t picture perfect, but that’s most likely far from the truth.
