So you think you know how to get healthier, right?

Eat lots of fruits and veggies, get a good night’s sleep, exercise, of course; but did you know that Social Connections are also an important part of a healthy lifestyle?

Studies show that social connections can:

  • lead to a 50% chance of a longer life

  • help you recover from disease faster

  • strengthen your immune system

  • reduce your risk of depression and anxiety

  • improve your self esteem and increase your level of empathy towards others

A big part of why we fell in love with the small boutique gym model as opposed to a larger big box gym is that a smaller atmosphere is the perfect setting for fostering real relationships. As we got older, became moms and life got in the way, building and maintaining those important relationships got more and more difficult. We often throw ourselves into our careers or being parents, and forget the importance of those social connections.

A more intimate atmosphere at a gym, a sense of community, is a great way to maintain a good level of social connection. Since we’re used to multitasking, why not combine building social connection with exercise since BOTH are good for our health? When you walk through our doors, you are not just a number. You are a part of a community that welcomes, supports and cares for one another no matter your level.

What are the dangers of not having social connections?

Studies show that having low social connection is actually worse for your health than smoking, high blood pressure or obesity. What?! You can also increase your risk of depression and anxiety.

Now, more than ever, we are at risk of having low social connections. Many of us aren’t participating in the same social activities we were over a year ago. Fortunately, we have adapted, mixed it up and have discovered ways to make sure to keep those social connections high.

How can I increase my level of social connections?

Fortunately, you don’t need a 100 friends to reap the benefits of having social connections. It’s all about our own perceived sense of social connection, so even having one person who you can talk with and connect with is better than knowing a thousand people. Here are some ways you can build your social connection…

  • Come take a class! With our small environment, it’s easy to connect with new people before or after class. There’s nothing that bonds everyone together faster than doing a bunch of burpees together, right? We have classes both inside/masked and outside at the studio. We also host a lot of pop ups and BYOB events where you can chat and get to know fellow Remixers after class. Just being together, working out together, working towards our goals together can bring up those feelings of connection and help us maintain a good level of social connection.

  • Just virtual? Zoom is a great way to build connections! So many online workouts these days are either prerecorded or only the instructor can be seen. We love doing our virtual classes on zoom because then if you choose the instructor can see your form in real time and it feels just like an in person class. Not only is it more motivating to know that your instructor and your fellow participants can see you, but it also helps to increase that social connection. That accountability goes along way when you know that you instructor will miss you and know you’re not there if you don’t show up to class. We also encourage Remixers to chat before or after class on zoom!

  • Join our Facebook Accountability Group! Another great way to build connections is through our facebook accountability group. Start a conversation or join in on another thread and meet new people before seeing them in class. Yes, we discuss exercise and goals, but it’s also a way to get to know your fellow Remixers on a more personal level.

  • Connect with us in a VIP call! We now offer VIP calls to discuss your fitness and health goals through zoom with Mary Cate and Tricia. We are always looking to make more connections ourselves, so we thoroughly enjoy these calls and getting to know so many of you. We can’t wait to help you plan and achieve all of your goals.

**And remember, the best way to increase your social connections is to start with yourself. The better we take care of ourselves, the happier we will be and the more open we will be to forming new connections with others.
