How to Dress for Outdoor Workouts

It’s the first day of winter, and we are still going strong with the outdoor workouts.

Though many may be weary of working out in the frigid temperatures, there are surprisingly quite a number of positives to exercising during the colder month outside.

  1. You burn more calories! Shivering demands a lot of energy. Your body is working hard to keep itself warm, so you burn more calories when you’re working out in those cold temperatures.

  2. It’s good for you to get outside when you can for that vitamin d! During the winter months, we are often cooped up inside our homes (even more so this year!), so we really are missing out on that vitamin d exposure.

  3. The feeling of accomplishment after your outdoor workout class can’t be beat! We often say that the hardest part of the workout is just getting there and that’s especially true for outdoor workouts in the cold. Once you get moving, you’ll warm up and feel incredible when you are done.

Now that we’ve shared WHY you should workout outside during these cold months; we want to share the best way to dress for your outdoor workouts.

How to Dress for Outdoor Workouts

The key to dressing and staying warm for outdoor workouts is all about layering. You want to dress in layers that can easily be taking off as you warm up (which you will).

You also want to dress for about 20 degrees warmer than you would if you weren’t working out in that temperature since your body will heat up as you workout.

Why Should You Try An Outside Class With Us

Base layer: No matter how cold the temperature, you want to make sure that your base layer is sweat-wicking and avoid moisture-absorbing fabrics like cotton. Even though it’s cold, as you work out, you will produce sweat. If you are wearing an item that absorbs your sweat, you’ll be stuck with a wet shirt and will get colder faster. We love our Lululemon Swiftly Tech tops!

Keep your extremities warm! It’s important to keep your hands, feet and head warm since they’ll be the first ones to lose heat. Even during not-so-cold temperatures, your fingers and toes may get cold. We recommend warm, snug-fitting gloves and sweat-wicking socks to keep your hands and feet warm. **Pro Tip: layer up your gloves and socks!! Be sure to shop our Remix Gear so you can look cute while staying nice and toasty during your workouts.

Layer up: This one is key. If you add on layers like a jacket or sweatshirt, you can easily take those off while you get warm. An adorable vest (much like the Lululemon one we have in the studio) is a great item to add that’ll keep you warm while still allowing for movement in your arms.
