If you have, you most likely fall into two camps. The first group tends to be highly self motivated. They enjoy working out, pushing themselves and embrace the calming, peaceful atmosphere of working out that comes when you are by yourself.

The other group isn’t quite as self motivated with working out by themselves. The time drags. You may glance at your clock expecting at least 20 minutes or so have gone by only to see you’ve barely been working out for 5 minutes.

Whether you are in the self motivated group or need an extra push, working out in a group can help get you results. Yes, even you if you’re someone who does enjoy working out by themselves.

Why Working Out in a Group Can Help Get You Results

If you have been following along, then you may have heard us mention how amazing group fitness can be for your health. Those with social connections tend to live longer lives, recover from disease faster, reduced likelihood of anxiety and depression and improved level of self esteem and empathy towards others among other benefits.

Okay, so social connections are important for our health, but can they actually increase the likelihood of achieving our results?

The answer is yes!

According to the American Osteopathic Association, group exercise participants showed significant improvements in mental, physical and emotional well being. They also reported a reduction in perceived stress levels. By comparison, individual fitness participants on average worked out twice as long, and saw no significant changes in any measure, except in mental quality of life.

The number one reason people site for struggling to workout and achieve their fitness goals is time. So, it’s interesting that those who worked out by themselves on average worked out twice as long and still didn’t see the level of improvements that group fitness participants did says something.

  • When you take a group fitness class, the only thing you have to think about is what to wear. When you are working out by yourself, not only do you have to think about what to wear, but you also have to think about what you’re going to do, how long will you go, will you do strength training or cardio, will you do both, where will you work out, etc. Group Fitness takes the brainwork out of it so you can focus your energy on the workout itself.

  • Group exercise is motivating. If you fell into the highly self motivated group then you may be able to do well motivating yourself on your own.
